Parks & Recreation Updates will be emailed around the 10th of each month. <br />Parks and Recreation Department Happenings <br />August, 2019 <br /> <br /> IMPROVING HEALTH <br /> To help the community stay active and lead healthy lifestyles, Pop Up Group Fitness classes are <br />being held while the Gymnasium and Fitness Studio Floors are resurfaced at NBCC. Classes are <br />free and open to the public. <br /> Summer adult softball completed this month with 51 teams competing for championship <br />crowns. After a rain exhausted summer, fall league season began August 20 with 19 teams. <br /> Approximately 160 youth and 115 adults came to Highview pool for open/lap swimming this <br />summer. Ed-Venture Day Care visited about 22 times- bringing around 50 kids each visit! <br /> The Senior Hiking Club enjoyed the following hikes: Lake of the Isles, Lake Elmo Park Reserve, <br />the Mississippi River Gorge and Fort Snelling. <br /> 5 seniors attended the “Transform Your Stress Workshop” on August 7. This program meets <br />monthly at the New Brighton Community Center. <br /> 16 Senior’s refreshed their driving skills at the AARP Smart Drivers Safety Class. <br /> 13 Seniors enjoyed a mystery lunch in Vadnais Heights at Mad Jacks. The participants enjoyed <br />the rustic American fare. <br /> On August 15, 50 seniors from New Brighton, Roseville and St. Anthony enjoyed a beautiful day <br />on a riverboat cruise down the Mississippi. <br /> 141 seniors enjoyed going to the community center each week for Bridge, Mahjongg, Dominos, <br />500 Club, Hand and Foot, Duplicate Bridge and Stitching Club. <br /> PROTECTING NATURAL RESOURCES <br /> The City Forester is in the last stages of the Oak Wilt/Dutch Elm Disease Survey. <br /> FOSTERING HEALTHY YOUTH DEVELOPMENT <br /> Public Safety and Parks & Recreation hosted safety camp for youth ages 8-12. Kids participating <br />were assigned to one of four teams that were led by pairs of adult leaders, including police <br />officers, firefighters, and recreation staff. A variety of speakers and topics were presented, <br />related to fire, animal, weather, internet, and personal safety. <br /> Youth fall soccer and flag football season is vastly approaching. With close to 200 participants <br />registered, the excitement is building. Practices began August 20 and games on September 7. <br /> This summer, 389 individuals, mainly youth, participated in swimming lessons at Highview. <br /> Ed-Venture Day Care kids, ages 5-12, spent the month of August biking, paddling, jumping and <br />shooting. The program traveled to Elm Creek Park Reserve for Archery lessons and Native <br />American Games, kayaked on Long Lake, completed a 4-mile urban bike trip to Long Lake Beach, <br />enjoyed flips and fun at Zero Gravity Trampoline Park and took an urban hike to Hidden Oaks for <br />outdoor games and make your own ice cream sundaes. <br /> Youth tennis lessons were held at Hansen Park and Pike Lake Courts. 25 children, ages 4-12, <br />were taught beginner and intermediate tennis stokes such as forehand, backhand and serves. <br /> The Junior Golf Program concluded earlier in the month due to a couple of rain outs early on in <br />the summer. This season had a slight uptick in participants with 135+ juniors. <br /> The 49th Annual Junior Golf Tournament at Brightwood Hills featured 31 junior golfers from <br />throughout the metro area. The winner was a Brightwood Junior Golf Program product! <br /> <br /> <br />
