Parks & Recreation Updates will be emailed around the 10th of each month. <br />Parks and Recreation Department Happenings <br />February 2020 <br /> <br /> IMPROVING HEALTH <br /> 51 people attended the Senior Valentine’s Day Mixer. Attendees smiled and danced to the Malt <br />Shop Melodies music from the 50’s and 60’s. <br /> 25 people attended the Hiking Club kick off meeting. The group shared lots of excitement about <br />new potential hiking locations around the Twin Cities during the April 1-October 21 program. <br /> Landmark Travel showcased their upcoming summer travel trips to 11 potential travelers. <br /> Master Gardner’s held a class about how to take care of house plants. There were 2 people that <br />attend the free class. The informational class offered lots of suggestions on to how to keep <br />house plants bug free, happy and healthy. <br /> 22 senior drivers attended an AARP 4 hour refresher class. Completion of this course helps <br />reduce insurance costs for these drivers. <br /> Ten participants learned the Night Club Two Step, Swing Hustle and a Slow Dance during the <br />Night Club Dance Workshop. <br /> 10 participants attended a CPR/FA/AED training. <br /> 35 adults participated in water aerobics classes at Highview Middle School. <br /> <br /> FOSTERING HEALTHY YOUTH DEVELOPMENT <br /> Dance families enjoyed parent night with 50 children showing off their jazz, tap and ballet steps. <br /> 24 beginner ice skaters, ages 5-9, received certificates on February 3, after completing a skating <br />obstacle course and six ice skating classes at Freedom Park. <br /> Saturday gymnastic classes were held each week from 9am-Noon at Irondale High School <br />Gymnastic Gym with 65 children attending. <br /> 29 kids ages 3-6 were taught basic kicks and punches on Monday evenings during Little Tiger <br />Martial Arts at the NBCC. <br /> Participants, ages 7 through adult, participated in Tae-Kwon–Do classes on Monday evenings at <br />the NBCC. <br /> The 63 day outdoor ice rink season came to a close on February 23. The rinks did lose 10 days <br />due to weather, but the attendance was up again for the third consecutive year. We saw 9097 <br />visitors enjoying the parks, playgrounds, sledding hill and ice rinks. <br /> <br /> SUSTAINING FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY <br /> Staff replaced two levels of the Eagles Nest web tower. Heavy use of the Eagles Nest leads to <br />components showing wear and needing to be replaced. <br /> <br /> SUPPORTING COMMUNITY REINVESTMENT <br /> Adaptive Bowling for teens and adults is held each Saturday morning at the Mermaid Bowling <br />Center with 35 participants in attendance.
