REQUEST FOR CITY COUNCIL CONSIDERATION
ITEM DESCRIPTION: CONSIDER QUOTES FOR LED LUMINAIRES
DEPARTMENT HEAD’S APPROVAL: Craig Schlichting – Director of Community Assets and
Development
CITY MANAGER APPROVAL:

No comments to supplement this report _______ Comments attached ______

Recommendation: To Authorize Director of Community Assets and Development to sign the approved low
quote of $174,640 with J.H. Larson for the purchase of LED lights.

Legislative History: NA

Financial Impact: $174,640 in luminaires will be purchased by the City New Brighton and will be installed
by a contractor bid under a separate contract.

Explanation: During the summer and fall of 2020 the City anticipates transitioning all remaining High
Pressure Sodium (HPS) lights to LED. The Capital Improvement Plan anticipates $708,000 of investment
this year. To take advantage of current pricing, staff has solicited quotes for up to $175,000 in equipment.
If these luminaires were acquired under a general bid format we would anticipate an 8% mark up. The
vendor that provides these lights was recently bought out and we anticipate additional price adjustments
of 5% or more for each luminaire. Once purchased staff will continue to work on acquiring the additional
equipment needed and a contractor for installation. Staff received three quotes:

J.H. Larson $1,480/unit 117 units = $173,160
Graybar $1,483.43/unit 117 units =$173,651.31
Viking Electric $1,485/unit 117 units =$173,745

The City is able to add one unit to the total and remain below the $175,000 contract for bids threshold.

Costs and Funding: The total cost estimate for this work will be $174,640, which will be paid for by Fund
704, Street Lights.

________________________________________
Craig Schlichting, P.E.
Director of Community Assets and Development

Attachment: LED Quotes
AGENDA SECTION: Consent
REPORT DATE: May 20, 2020
MEETING DATE: May 26, 2020
