NEW BRIGHTON DEPARTMENT OF
PUBLIC SAFETY
Memorandum
To: Public Safety Commissioners
From: Tony Paetznick, Director of Public Safety
Subject: Traffic Control Sign Petition
Date: September 5, 2019

Public Safety received the attached petition on August 22nd that requests the installation of stop signs by
the City of New Brighton at several intersections in the residential neighborhood that is located east of
the northern half of Hansen Park. The resident who submitted the document has indicated that he will
be in attendance at our regularly scheduled monthly meeting on Monday, September 9th at 6:30pm.
The Department of Community Assets and Development (DCAD) was also made aware of the receipt of
this petition and has assembled some historical information that follows in this packet, including a street
sign inventory map and historical stop sign requests for that neighborhood along with some highlighted
traffic counts for that neighborhood. DCAD has started collecting additional vehicle count data.
Further attached to this document are annual reported traffic crash maps since 2014 along with a
couple more localized maps of just stop signs and yield signs in the area requested, and a comparison
neighborhood of similar layout, that being the residential streets behind the Public Safety Center.
DCAD Director Craig Schlichting and I will both be in attendance at the September 9th meeting to provide
context for all of this data and answer any questions of the Commission related to this request.
Finally, at the end I have attached the presentation from the August Public Safety Commission meeting
on the topic of Addressing Citizen Requests for Traffic Safety Concerns as much of the information
discussed last month will potentially be of use by Commissioners in analyzing the neighborhood petition
and developing any recommendations for consideration by the City Council.
