13
X. OTHER ADMINISTRATIVE

This section will review the ongoing administrative issues and meetings during the
month. This includes meetings, policy issues, ordinance changes, and personnel issues.
It also includes meetings of a county wide, regional, and/or statewide basis on public
safety related issues.

XI. RECOGNITION, NEWS AND INFORMATION

This section will include “good news” information about our public safety personnel.
This will include formal and informal recognition of the department and/or its personnel
on or off duty.

Currently three, and soon to be four, full-time police officers are absent from the
organization for extended periods as they are all utilizing Family and Medical Leave Act
(FMLA). Now that our three School Resource Officers (SROs) have returned to their
contractual assignments for the academic year and are no longer able to supplement our
patrol strength as they did during the summertime months, the absence of several sworn
peace officers at the same time from the department is generating a significant amount of
overtime to maintain adequate staffing of patrol shifts.

Firefighters provided their traditional assist to police officers on the first day of school by
deploying banners with pedestrian safety messages affixed to the rear of fire engines on
Tuesday morning, September 3, and parking along the main routes to the many schools in
New Brighton to warn the motoring public of students returning to the sidewalks and
crosswalks of the community.

The Police Division’s newest hire, Zelia Hoke, began her initial training in use of force
and firearms on Tuesday, September 10. She will begin her field training next week.

Chris Rother started his new full-time assignment as our daytime Public Safety Officer
(PSO).

Officers Griffin, DeDominces, and Slack, who were first responders to the July 11 near-
drowning of a 15 year old male in the outdoor pool at Garden View Apartments, met with
medical staff at Hennepin County Medical Center on Friday, September 13, to discuss
their use of the EleGARD patient positioning system that was used while performing
CPR during this incident. A lifesaving award presentation will be scheduled at an
upcoming City Council meeting to recognize their efforts.
