CITY OF NEW BRIGHTON <br />WHEREAS What was to become the Parish of Saint John the Baptist started in 1883 with a monthly <br />Mass held at the home of Frank and Joann Marston and was officially founded in 1902 <br />to serve the Village of New Brighton (population 350) and families in the surrounding <br />area; and; <br />WHEREAS New Brighton's population grew from 2,218 in 1950 to 19,507 in 1970 necessitating a <br />large-scale parish building program. This endeavor began with the arrival of Father <br />(later Monsignor) Paul Koscielniak in 1950, started with the school in 1952 and ended <br />with the new church in 1968 to meet the needs of the Parish which grew from 500 <br />families to over 2,000 in the same time period; and <br />WHEREAS Fundraising for the new church began in 1965 and architect, Marlin D. Hutchinson was <br />hired to work with liturgical consultant Frank Kacmarcik the same year. Construction <br />started with groundbreaking April 1967 and was completed August 1968, allowing the <br />first Mass to be held in the new Church on August 25, 1968; and <br />WHEREAS The new church was in the first wave of new church buildings after the Second <br />Vatican Council or Vatican II (1962 — 1965) which addressed relations between <br />the Catholic Church and the modern world; and <br />WHEREAS In 1968 the new church edifice received national recognition when it received a Merit <br />Award— the highest award presented — at the Architectural Design Competition at the <br />Liturgical Conference held in Washington D.C. <br />NOW, THEREFOREI, VAL-ER-IEJOHNSON—Mayor-of—T-he-City-of-New -Brighton,—Minnesota-do <br />hereby congratulate: <br />NEW <br />BRIGHTON <br />building tomorrow today <br />John the Baptist Parish <br />in the City of New Brighton on their 50t' Anniversary of the New <br />Church Edifice and recognize the contributions of the Parish and the <br />0 member families to the Community of New Brighton and beyond. <br />IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my <br />hand and caused the Seal of the City of New Brighton, <br />Minnesota to be axed this 23rd day ofApril, 2019. <br />I Z �� / 'Zi/w. <br />VALERIE JOHNSON — MAYO <br />
