Parks and Recreation Department Happenings <br />December 2014 <br />IMPROVING HEALTH <br />o A total of 33 people took advantage of the 30 -Day Holiday Fitness Pass. <br />o More than 40 people attended two AARP Smart Driver classes this month. <br />o A coach bus took 56 adults 55+ to the Porterhouse Steakhouse for lunch and a tour of the <br />Governor's Mansion on December 16. This was the largest day trip planned only through the City <br />of New Brighton in more than four years. <br />o Duplicate Bridge had the largest group ever present for their holiday party at 18 tables which <br />equates to 72 people. All enjoyed potluck refreshments and three hours of playing bridge with <br />residents and invited guests. This group typically meets every Thursday from Noon-3:30pm. <br />0 34 teens and young adults with physical and mental disabilities completed a 10 week bowling <br />program at the Mermaid Lanes. Participants celebrated with a holiday party on December 13. <br />0 100 adults (50 and over) attended the Pickleball open gyms at Highview Middle School in <br />December. <br />o Six Co-Rec teams and seven women's volleyball teams finished up their fall league in December. <br />Winter leagues will start on January 7 and 8. <br />• PROTECTING NATURAL RESOURCES <br />o The City Forester has been doing trimming in parks and right of ways. <br />FOSTERING HEALTHY YOUTH DEVELOPMENT <br />0 57 children participated in the annual Holiday Dance Show. It was held at Sunnyside School due <br />to construction projects at the community center. Over 200 parents and friends attended the event. <br />o Gymnastic classes showed off their skills during parent night on Dec. 15 at Irondale High School. <br />62 children demonstrated skills to their parents and grandparents. <br />0 37 children, ages 3-17 participated in karate and Little Tigers Martial Arts in December at the <br />NBCC. <br />0 27 children finished basketball skills camp in early December at the New Brighton Community <br />Center. <br />0 44 New Brighton children and 11 St. Anthony children participated in soccer camps over the past <br />Thursdays and Saturdays at Highview Middle School. <br />SUSTAINING FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY <br />0 147 children participate with our December 26, 2014 Adventure Day. <br />o NBCC booked 953 parties and 128 groups in 2014. <br />o In the last six months members have traveled 37,523 miles in the Fitness Center at the NBCC. <br />o Staff met with Active Network and Maximum Solutions to discuss recreation software proposals. <br />o NBCC facility rental revenues experienced an 11% increase in 2014 compared to 2013 (which <br />was a record breaking year in facility rentals). This included 2,644 facility bookings (compared <br />to 2,156 in 2013). <br />o The New Brighton Community Center had 473,888 building visitors in 2014. <br />SUPPORTING COMMUNITY REINVESTMENT <br />o NBCC's main level restrooms reopened on December 18 after undergoing renovations. <br />o The ice rink season got off to a slow start with warm weather causing havoc with the ice. <br />Freedom Park did open for the December 20-21 weekend and again for the season starting on <br />December 27 following a colder spell. Hansen Park and Sunnyside Park also finally opened <br />during the week of December 30.
