Parks and Recreation Department Happenings <br />January 2015 <br />IMPROVING HEALTH <br />o More than 900 people entered the New Brighton Community Center for the 10th Annual Health & Fitness Expo on <br />Saturday, January 10, 2015. This year, there were 45 paid vendors, 4 in-house or trade for service vendors for a total <br />of 49, in addition to 7 company donations, and 5 speakers. Between vendor and sponsorships, the total vendor <br />revenue was $4,219. Volunteers are solicited to help the department run this event efficiently and smoothly. This <br />year, 20 volunteers of varying ages assisted staff, calculating 74 volunteer hours! During the event, 44 individuals <br />sampled group fitness classes, of those, 20 people tried Pickleball. There were 12 people who attended the mini - <br />seminars. Personal trainers were on hand to answer questions and meet with people, 11 personal training services <br />were sold as a result. This year, a discount was given of $30 to all new memberships enrolled, plus a free gift. A <br />total of 56 new memberships were processed, which equates to 114 new members. <br />o AARP hosted a Drivers Safety training and 12 people attended. <br />o Ten adult volleyball teams play in leagues on Wednesday and Thursday evenings at Highview School. <br />0 32 teenagers and young adults are participating in the adaptive bowling program held at Mermaid Lanes. <br />o A total of eight people attended the Landmark Tours Travel Show, with a majority showing great interest in <br />traveling in 2015. <br />• PROTECTING NATURAL RESOURCES <br />o Tree trimming occurred at the golf course, Sunny Square and Hidden Oaks Parks. <br />FOSTERING HEALTHY YOUTH DEVELOPMENT <br />o Thirty nine children, ages 3-17, are participating in martial arts programs at the community center. <br />0 27 children, ages 5-9, enjoyed mild weather at Freedom Park for ice skating lessons on Wednesdays. <br />0 69 children are taking tap, jazz and ballet lessons at the community center. One additional class was added. <br />0 61 children, ages 4-14, are taking gymnastic classes at Irondale High School gymnastic gym. <br />0 22 youth are registered for New Brighton Basketball Camps that started on Jan. 4th <br />o A total of 11 New Brighton youth and two St. Anthony youth are taking soccer classes. <br />0 216 participants are in January's New Brighton Swimming Lessons which 3 of them are private swim <br />lessons. All swimming is held at the Highview Middle School Pool. <br />SUSTAINING FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY <br />o The NBCC is the chosen place to meet for a number of on-going rentals. Many of these groups have been meeting <br />here for multiple years and 16 groups will continue to meet in 2015. Meeting on a regular basis include: Mpls. <br />Christian Assembly, Risen Life Church, Igbo Women's League, Big Book Study of AA, MUFON, Executive Manor <br />Condos, Pure Romance, Synergy BNI, MN Medical Training, Smart Recovery, Pastel Society, Advantage <br />Education Programs, MN Kali Group North, Northern Impact Volleyball, CSI and U of MN ICI. We are grateful <br />for their business. <br />o Men's volleyball league rentals at Highview Gym have been secured for Winter and Spring 2015. <br />o Four adults are taking group guitar lessons at the community center. <br />o Friends of Sunny Square Park are volunteering during the winter to supervise the warming house at Sunny <br />Square Park during the outdoor rink season. While the planning process took place throughout 2014, the <br />on-site volunteers didn't begin until January 2015. <br />• SUPPORTING COMMUNITY REINVESTMENT <br />o The new women's locker room and the renovated second floor restrooms are now open for NBCC visitors. <br />Construction of the men's locker room is now underway. <br />o Parks maintenance will be purchasing a new John Deere gator, this is for athletic field lining and ball field <br />grooming. <br />PARKS & RECREATION UPDATES <br />If you would like to receive parks and recreation updates on a monthly basis via email, you may sign up on the city website at <br />www.newbrightommn.gov.
