Parks and Recreation Department Happenings <br />June 2015 <br />• IMPROVING HEALTH <br />o There were 14 adults 55+ who attended the Saints Game on June 24. <br />o More than 60 individuals registered for the AARP Drivers Safety course in June. <br />o July is National Park and Recreation Month, and will be celebrated through a variety of free, <br />family friendly events. The events range from a family movie night featuring E.T. to a bike tour <br />at Hansen Park and from free open swim at Highview pool to a family game night. <br />PROTECTING NATURAL RESOURCES <br />o Forestry staff has been busy trimming trees along pathways, sidewalks and around street signs to <br />improve visibility and safety for pedestrians along these routes. <br />o Parks/forestry staffs have been renewing the wood chips around NBCC, City Hall and Public <br />Safety Center, as well as along the corridor of Old Hwy 8. Staff is also putting wood chips <br />around trees in the parks. <br />o Medians and concrete areas along Silver Lake Road have been sprayed to inhibit weed growth. <br />FOSTERING HEALTHY YOUTH DEVELOPMENT <br />o There were 176 soccer league participants who started league play with Shoreview, Mounds <br />View, and Arden Hills June 8`'' <br />o The first year of Outdoor Basketball had 29 participants in the program pairing with Ed Ventures <br />Day Care Program. <br />o Brightwood Hills Golf Course started the summer Junior Golf League, which includes lessons, in <br />mid-June with just under 150 participants. <br />o Outdoor soccer camps started the beginning of June with 127 New Brighton participants and 59 <br />St. Anthony participants for a total of 186 children in all the camps. <br />o New Brighton's Youth Baseball Leagues started this month with 107 participants. <br />o June T -Ball camps started with 25 participants learning the fundamentals of baseball and having <br />fun. <br />o Ed -Venture Day Care program at Freedom Park started June 8 with 60 children are enrolled. <br />0 29 children visited the Minnesota Train Museum on Friday June 12. <br />o Ed -Ventures Day Care program brought 27 children on a Friday trip to Fawn -Doe- Rosa in St. <br />Croix Falls to visit the wild animal park. <br />o Youth tennis classes are running at Hansen Park and Hidden Oaks Park. 30 children are enrolled. <br />o Summer gymnastic classes are being held at Irondale with 50 children learning apparatus skills. <br />0 40 children are enrolled in dance classes at NBCC on Wednesday evenings. <br />o Karate classes and Little Tiger Martial Arts classes started June 8 with 33 children attending. <br />SUSTAINING FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY <br />o Group golf lessons packaged as Get Golf Ready completed two sessions in June with 18 students <br />now ready to enjoy the game. <br />o Three adults are signed up for semi private guitar lessons at NBCC. <br />o Sixty-three adult softball teams play weekly games in New Brighton with over 750 adults. <br />SUPPORTING COMMUNITY REINVESTMENT <br />o EAB injections began the week of June 22. This year treatment is occurring on all Ash trees <br />greater than 18" along the boulevards and in Parks/City owned properties. <br />o Driftwood and Hidden Oaks park shelters were demolished the week of June 15. Driftwood was <br />completed on June 17 and Hidden Oaks was completed on June 20. <br />o Open Pickleball is held at Hansen Park and Hidden Oaks park each week on Tuesdays and <br />Fridays during the summer months. <br />PARKS & RECREATION UPDATES <br />If you would like to receive parks and recreation updates on a monthly basis via email, you may sign up on the city website at <br />www.newbrightonnm.gov.
