Parks and Recreation Department Happenings <br />August 2015 <br />IMPROVING HEALTH <br />o 25 adults 55+ attended a free Education & Enrichment Workshop on hoarding. <br />o 49 individuals attended the AARP Smart Driver Safety Classes this month. <br />o 13 New Brighton participants enjoyed a summer day on the Lake Minnetonka Boat Cruise. <br />o 25 Adult softball teams (300+ players) are playing in fall softball leagues on Monday, Tuesdays <br />and Thursdays in New Brighton in both men's and co-rec leagues. <br />o 13 youth, teens and adults are taking karate lessons each Monday in August at NBCC. <br />o 119 participants registered for group fitness classes at NBCC. <br />o 7 participants registered for CPR/AED First Aid and Safety Training for the community rescuer. <br />PROTECTING NATURAL RESOURCES <br />o Disease tree survey completed finding 5 ash trees with EAB, 10 red oaks with Oak Wilt and 15 <br />elms with Dutch Elm Disease. <br />o Residents wanting a tree planted (limited supply) on their boulevard should contact the City <br />Forester by Sept. 21. Detailed information can be obtained on the City's web page under <br />Departments/Parks and Recreation/Forestry/Gravel Bed Trees. <br />FOSTERING HEALTHY YOUTH DEVELOPMENT <br />o Over 380 youth participants, their families, and volunteer coaches joined in the fun at the annual <br />youth sports ice cream socials. Coaches and parents were served ice cream donated by Culvers <br />and Dairy Queen (Old Hwy 8). Public Safety provided a fire truck for tours, badges, hats and fun <br />education. <br />o Youth Soccer and NFL Flag Football Coaches meeting was hosted on Tuesday, August 18. The <br />meetings were attended by passionate volunteer coaches who are excited to kick off the new <br />season and begin fall practices. <br />o 42 youth enjoyed our extended seasonal offering of our learn to swim program, authorized by <br />American Red Cross. <br />o 28 Ed -Venture Day Care children took a field trip to the Unique Thrift on August 7 for a <br />scavenger hunt to search for items that could be use when you go off to college. <br />o 26 Ed -Venture Day Care children received kayak lessons at Long Lake Boat launch August 14. <br />o 27 Ed -Venture Day Care children visited Como Zoo, the Sparky Show and Mini Golf August 21 <br />o 29 Ed -Venture Day Care youth attended the loam movie on Aug. 20 at the MV Theater. <br />o 39 Ed -Venture Day Care children visited the St. Anthony Splash Pad on August 25. <br />o 28 Ed -Venture Day Care children used the Disc golf course at Hansen Park on August 27. <br />o 38 Ed -Venture Day Care children spent the afternoon of August 28 at the Zero Gravity <br />Trampoline Park. <br />o Brightwood Hills Golf Course completed all of the Junior Programs for the season — the Junior <br />Scramble, the annual Junior Tournament and the summer long Junior League. <br />SUSTAINING FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY <br />o Staff attended the free field trip Expo at the Minnesota History Museum on August 17 to collect <br />ideas for new program ideas and field trip information for youth and senior citizen programs. <br />o Family newsletters were emailed out to 45 Ed -Venture families each week in August. <br />o Most of the golf leagues at Brightwood Hills that are the backbone of the facility have completed <br />or will complete their season by the end of August. <br />SUPPORTING COMMUNITY REINVESTMENT <br />o The current TV's in the cardio side of the NBCC fitness center were replaced on August 26 after <br />42,000 hours of use over the past eight years. The constant use causes image retention issues on <br />the screen. They are being replaced by improved technology, high resolution for a sharper <br />picture. <br />0 INSPEC Engineering was hired to conduct a forensics review of the NBCC building envelope. <br />INSPEC recommended repairs of various parts of the building to protect the City's investment. <br />
