Parks and Recreation Department Happenings <br />October 2015 <br />IMPROVING HEALTH <br />o Swimming allows youth and adults the opportunity to experience challenge, fun, and enjoyment <br />while increasing their self-esteem and decreasing their stress. Did you know New Brighton Parks <br />and Recreation Department offers swim lessons to anyone looking to improve their skills? <br />Although there is a minimum age of 6 months, there isn't a maximum age meaning anyone can <br />join the fun! <br />o 719 participants enjoyed group fitness class opportunities this fall. <br />o 40 individuals participated in the October AARP Smart Drivers Safety Courses. <br />o 5 adults are taking two step dance classes at the New Brighton Community Center. <br />o 56 women are participating in volleyball leagues at Highview Middle School each Wednesday. <br />o 28 teens and young adults are attending adaptive bowling weekly at the Mermaid Lanes. <br />o 20 adults 55+ enjoyed a Stillwater Riverboat tour. <br />PROTECTING NATURAL RESOURCES <br />o During the month of October the Park Maintenance Worker -Forester and Park Maintenance crew <br />planted boulevard trees requested by residents of the city. A total of 68 trees were planted on the <br />residential boulevards. Another 48 new trees will be planted throughout city parks. The gravel <br />bed will over -winter 25 trees for spring plantings and Arbor Day. <br />o The Adopt -a -Park Program is designed to encourage partnerships between citizen groups and the <br />City of New Brighton to help maintain and enhance parks and open spaces. The Adopt -a -Park <br />program has been another great success for the City of New Brighton parks. A total of 9 <br />organizations adopted 8 parks and trail systems during the months of April through November. <br />FOSTERING HEALTHY YOUTH DEVELOPMENT <br />o 143 youth participated in basketball and soccer camps. <br />o 128 youth participants enjoyed in house soccer league play. <br />o 42 youth participants enjoyed league play in the new NFL Flag Football league. <br />o 230 daily admissions were sold at the annual NBCC "Touch —a -Truck" Adventure Day. Five <br />different vehicles were on display from Ramsey County, New Brighton Public Safety and Allina <br />Health. The Eagles Nest and Open Gym activities face painting, balloon creations and mural <br />coloring all took place. <br />o 66 youth participated in dance classes on Wednesdays at the community center. <br />o Gymnastic classes held at Irondale on Mondays have 59 youth and teens participating weekly. <br />o Martial Arts classes meeting at the community center have 46 participants each week. <br />o A representative from Usborne Books and More set up a book fair during the first Adventure Day <br />of the school year. <br />o Brightwood Hills hosted a cross country meet for the Middle Schools and Mounds View <br />Community Education on October 1. 85 runners from Highview, Chippewa and Edgewood <br />Middle schools ran a 1.2 mile (2K) loop on the interior of the golf course. The entire event was <br />positive with talk of making this an annual event. <br />SUSTAINING FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY <br />o Staff visited the communities of Apple Valley, Roseville and Edina to review recreation software. <br />o The Holly Day Boutique was held in the NBCC's Community Rooms from October 5-17 <br />garnering over $3,500 in facility rental fees. The same group will be coming back in April 2016. <br />o The following rental groups have confirmed 2016 reservations dates: Synergy BNI, Ducks <br />Unlimited, MKG North, Igbo Women League, Pastel Society, and Risen Life. <br />SUPPORTING COMMUNITY REINVESTMENT <br />o Playgrounds provide crucial and vital opportunities for children to play. Research shows a clear <br />link between play and brain development, motor -skills, and social capabilities.
