NEW <br />BRIGHTON <br />building tomorrow today <br />Council Worksession <br />March 9, 2021 <br />5:00 pm <br />Present: Mayor Kari Niedfeldt-Thomas <br />Councilmember Abdullahi Abdulle <br />Councilmember Graeme Allen <br />Councilmember Pam Axberg <br />Councilmember Emily Dunsworth <br />Absent: <br />Staff in Attendance: Devin Massopust <br />Guests in Attendance: <br />Due to the COVID-19 pandemic this meeting was held virtually. <br />Commission Interviews <br />Mayor Niedfeldt-Thomas reported Kristin Hicks would be the first person interviewed. She thanked Ms. Hicks <br />for her interest in serving on a City Commission. She discussed the process that would be followed for the <br />Commission interviews and appointments. <br />Councilmember Abdulle asked Ms. Hicks to provide the Council with a brief history on her background and <br />community involvement. <br />Kristin Hicks explained she was originally from Eau Claire, Wisconsin and came to Roseville for college. <br />After college she lived in Minneapolis for a number of years. She noted she moved to New Brighton in 2016. <br />She reported she works for a local agricultural commodities trading company, The Skolar Company, in <br />Minneapolis, but these days from home. She indicated her role was in IT, she was the Digital Experience <br />Manager, and a big part of that job was communicating between users and the IT department to ensure the two <br />groups are on the same page. She indicated she was very involved in her community growing up, especially in <br />high school. However after getting married and having kids she has gotten away from this. She stated she was <br />spurred to get involved in the community after volunteering to be an election judge last fall. <br />Councilmember Allen asked what motivated her to serve on a City Commission. <br />Ms. Hicks stated this opportunity came to her through an email and she was excited because she is a park and <br />recreation nerd. She explained she participated in parks and recreation programs as a kid and enjoys using the <br />City's parks. She believed parks and recreation was the right place for he. She indicated she was passionate <br />about community, a strong culture, along with social justice and equity. She commented she was also <br />concerned with sustainability issues. <br />Councilmember Axberg stated each Commission is tasked with making recommendations to the City Council <br />that comply with policies, rules or ordinances already adopted by the City Council. She asked Ms. Hicks what <br />she would do if she disagreed with a policy or ordinance already in place. <br />
