She explained this has given her a great deal of perspective over the <br /> years. <br /> Councilmember Allen asked what the most important responsibilities a commission member had to the <br /> community. <br /> Ms. Kitzhaber stated showing up and being active in meetings would be important. In addition, she would <br /> work to represent the City and the Commission. She would speak highly of the group and not be putting the <br /> Council down. <br /> Mayor Johnson asked how she would respond if a member of the community were to contact her expressing <br /> opposition to an item being addressed by your commission. <br /> Ms. Kitzhaber commented she would hear them out and the reasons for the concern. She would then bring the <br /> concern to the commission to see if further discussion was necessary. <br /> Mayor Johnson asked if these actions would change if it was a lifelong friend. <br /> Ms. Kitzhaber indicated this may be better because it would lead to a deeper conversation. She believed this <br /> would be great because it would help her connect to why they felt a certain way about the issue. <br /> Councilmember Jacobsen reported each commission is tasked with making recommendations to the City <br /> Council. He asked how Ms. Kitzhaber would respond if she disagreed with a policy or Ordinance already in <br /> place. <br /> Ms. Kitzhaber stated the obvious answer would be to state she disrespectfully disagreed but noted she would <br /> do some research as to why a decision was made. She indicated this may change the way she feels about the <br /> issue. <br /> Councilmember Allen asked what the City's biggest challenges were. <br /> Ms. Kitzhaber reported this was a great question and she did not know how to answer it. She stated she felt a <br /> little-disconnected-from the-City-and needed-to-better-understand-the-communities-needs.-She-explained-she-did- <br /> not have a great sense of community on her street and believed that being on a commission would help her <br /> build community. <br /> Mayor Johnson asked if she was interested in land uses and variances; diversity and accessibility; economic <br /> programs, retention and development; the impact of recreation on the community; or the impacts of public <br /> safety. <br /> Ms. Kitzhaber commented she was most interested in public safety. She noted she would also be interested in <br /> parks and recreation. <br /> Mayor Johnson discussed the process the Council would be following for the committee member <br /> appointments. She thanked Ms. Kitzhaber for her interest in serving and asked if she had any questions. <br /> Ms. Kitzhaber asked how much time was required outside of the meetings. <br /> Councilmember Jacobsen commented this depended on the engagement levels of the commission members. He <br /> indicated meeting attendance, National Night Out and several Open Houses were activities of the Public Safety <br />
