Commission came to this decision. <br /> Councilmember Dunsworth reported each commission is tasked with making recommendations to the City <br /> Council. She asked how Mr. Wakai would respond if he disagreed with a policy or Ordinance already in place. <br /> Mr. Wakai stated he would bring this up to the Commission and ask for more information on this. He would <br /> bring up points that he did not believe were favorable and ask for more enlightenment on the issues. <br /> Mayor Johnson asked what the City's biggest challenges were. <br /> Mr. Wakai stated management of parks was a concern for him. He noted he lived near Hansen Park. He <br /> commented another concern for him was lead in water and the affects this had on children. <br /> Councilmember Burg asked if he was interested in land uses and variances; economic programs, retention and <br /> development; the impact of recreation on the community; or the impacts of public safety. <br /> Mr. Wakai stated he was most interested in land use and parks. <br /> Mayor Johnson discussed the process the Council would be following for the committee member <br /> appointments. She thanked Mr. Wakai for his interest in serving and asked if he had any questions. <br /> Mr. Wakai asked what the Council expected from Commissioners in the first couple of months. <br /> Mayor Johnson stated the first couple of months for Commissioners was getting to know the lay of the land, <br /> being trained in the new position. She noted Commissioners were given an iPad from the City to use for City <br /> meetings. Lotter explained his staff provides support to each Commission. He reported these staff members <br /> would set up meetings with new Commissioners to assist in familiarizing the new members with their new <br /> role. He commented there was a learning process for Commissioners. <br /> Lotter asked if Mr. Wakai would be interested in serving on the Planning Commission versus Parks and <br /> Recreation. <br /> Mr. Wakai commented he would be interested in serving with this group. <br /> Councilmember Burg explained the City's Commissions study topics and make recommendations to the City <br /> Council. She indicated this saves the Council a great deal of time and noted she appreciated the <br /> Commissioners input and expertise. <br /> Mayor Johnson reported the main role for Commissioners was to advise the City Council. <br /> Mr. Wakai questioned what the City's biggest challenge was with respect to the environment. <br /> Lotter stated this would be with the City's drinking water. He noted the City was downstream from a WWII <br /> ammunition plant which has contaminated the City's drinking water. He discussed the new solution that the <br /> City had in place within the water treatment plant. He commented further on the redevelopment of the New <br /> Brighton Exchange site, which was a former dump site. <br /> Mayor Johnson thanked Mr. Wakai for his interest in serving the community and discussed the process the <br /> Council would be following in the next couple of weeks prior to making the Commission appointments. <br />
