Councilmember Dunsworth discussed cultural placemaking and suggested this be included in the Equity
Commissions tasks.
Mayor Niedfeldt-Thomas questioned how the communication of the launch of this Commission should be
completed by the City. She indicated there were many ideas about race at this time and she didn't want the
narrative of this group lose focus. Ms. Tabor explained she was available to help the City with communicating
this with the public. She recommended the City be proactive in shaping how people view this group. She
believed the City Council had done a good job engaging the community throughout this process. She
discussed the great work being done by Naka-Creative in getting information to the minority population.
Councilmember Abdulle requested further information on consensus based decision making. Ms. Tabor stated
this was very difficult to achieve at times, but can be done by a diverse group like this. She explained this
group needs to be able to come to agreements about what to do together.
Mayor Niedfeldt-Thomas stated the Council could add language suggesting all candidates be able to have the
ability to engage in hard conversations.
Councilmember Allen indicated this group would have to talk about tough things and the members would have
to be able to talk about sensitive matters. He commented on how important it was for the group to understand
the Equity Commission would be working on a consensus based decision making basis.
Mayor Niedfeldt-Thomas thanked Ms. Tabor and staff for all of their efforts.
Massopust thanked the Council for all of their feedback and encouraged the Councilmembers to begin
recruiting for this Commission.
Worksession adjourned at 6:56 pm
Respectfully submitted,
Terri Spangrud
City Clerk
