Councilmember Dunsworth suggested the position be taken a little further and that the work of the <br /> Commission be recognized further by the Council liaisons. She discussed the difficult issues the Commissions <br /> tackled and she wanted their work recognized by the City Council. <br /> Councilmember Axberg stated she has experience with the Girl Scouts River Valley Board, noting they always <br /> have a girl scout representative on the board of directors. She noted this girl scout has always been a voting <br /> member and this has worked out well. <br /> Mayor Niedfeldt-Thomas recommended a desired outcome should be to have the Comp Plan vision top of <br /> mind for each of the Commissions. She believed this would prompt items that should be addressed by specific <br /> Commissions. Massopust explained a column on the side of the work plan could be added to state what <br /> specific Comp Plan goal this was working towards. He stated he appreciated the comments from the Council <br /> on how valuable it was to communicate clearly between the Council and Commissions with frequent check- <br /> ins. <br /> Mayor Niedfeldt-Thomas supported having check-ins often between the Council and its Commissions. She <br /> believed this was a great way to build community engagement. She discussed how well the short-term rental <br /> Ordinance was managed by the Planning Commission and the Council. <br /> Councilmember Abdulle discussed how Commissioners were ambassadors for the City and how <br /> Commissioners assisted the Council in making more meaningful decisions for the benefit of the community. <br /> He stated he would like to see the Council striving for more diversity on its Commissions in order to have all <br /> cross sections of the community represented. <br /> The Commission directed staff to amend City Code to allow for student commissioners to have the right to <br /> vote on all Commissions. <br /> Mayor Niedfeldt-Thomas stated she wanted to be sure that when work plans are created that the progress being <br /> made is communicated clearly to the City Council to ensure the City was moving in the right direction. She <br /> discussed how important it would be to have these updates in writing for the Council and community to <br /> review. <br /> Councilmember Allen asked what the logistical challenges would be to moving the Commission member <br /> onboarding to one month earlier. He discussed how more work for staff would be generated if Commission <br /> members were to take on individual issues. Massopust stated he would have to consult with the City Clerk to <br /> see what this would mean. He did not believe there was a whole lot involved in appointing and onboarding <br /> Commissioners one month earlier. He explained he did not see any barriers to pursuing this timeline. <br /> Councilmember Dunsworth commented she was not opposed to pursuing this timeline. She indicated she <br /> would be more than happy to help with the onboarding to get new Commissioners up to speed. <br /> Councilmember Abdulle stated he also did not oppose to changing the Commission appointment schedule. <br /> Mayor Niedfeldt-Thomas supported changing the schedule as well. <br /> Councilmember Allen stated his push for changing the timeline was to get new members into meetings earlier <br /> prior to having them contribute to meetings and the formal work plan. <br /> Councilmember Dunsworth thanked staff for their efforts on this and stated she was looking forward to <br />
