Proclamation <br />CITY OF NEW BRIGHTON <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />WHEREAS, On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation <br />Proclamation, declaring slaves in Confederate territory free, paving the way for the <br />abolition of slavery in the United States of America; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Word about the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation did not reach all slaves in <br />the southern states until June 19, 1865; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, In 1866 the first celebration of “Jubilee Day” was celebrated on June 19th and is <br />recognized as a celebration of freedom in the Black community; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Recognizing Juneteenth is an opportunity for education, recognition, action and <br />celebration of freedom in our community; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, The City of New Brighton has identified a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion as <br />a strategic priority and has thus created the New Brighton Equity Commission to <br />address such issues on a continual basis; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Juneteenth is an important opportunity to honor the principles of freedom in the U.S.A. <br />and celebrate the achievements and contributions the Black community has made, and <br />continues to make in our region and the City of New Brighton. <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE I, KARI NIEDFELDT-THOMAS, Mayor of The City of New Brighton, Minnesota <br />do hereby declare June 19, 2022: <br /> <br />Juneteenth Day <br /> <br />in the City of New Brighton and hope that this recognition encourages <br />our residents to reflect, learn, understand, participate and celebrate in <br />community-based events to celebrate Juneteenth and it’s meaning in our <br />region. <br /> <br /> <br />IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my <br />hand and caused the Seal of the City of New Brighton, <br />Minnesota to be affixed this 14th day of June, 2022. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> KARI NIEDFELDT-THOMAS – MAYOR
