Councilmember Dunsworth stated she would like to know more about how food instability was a climate issue.
Schlichting indicated he would look into this further.

Councilmember Axberg inquired if any lakeshore recommendations have been considered. Schlichting stated
the plan did not have this level of detail to date.

Mayor Niedfeldt-Thomas indicated she would like to see the plan addressing soil conservation. Schlichting
reported the living streets plan could have rain garden and plant recommendations for residents to consider.

Mayor Niedfeldt-Thomas questioned if building materials were being addressed by the PIE group.

Further discussion ensued regarding how density impacts transportation options in the community.

Mayor Niedfeldt-Thomas requested staff reach out to the members of the community that attended the Iftar
event to see if they were interested in participating in the Climate Action Plan. She commented further on what
carbon neutrality was and questioned what the City’s goal was for 2050. Schlichting explained the CAP would
be updated periodically, similar to the Comp Plan in order to allow the City to continue to address the climate
goals for the community.

Councilmember Abdulle questioned when public input would be pursued. Massopust reported information
would not be shared until a more formal plan was place. He explained he could speak with the consultant to
see if additional community engagement should be pursued.

Mayor Niedfeldt-Thomas commented she believed the equity engagement for this plan was slim. She
requested staff push back to the consultants and ask for more. She noted this engagement does not have to
occur now, but hopefully more will occur later. Massopust reported an online survey and online review survey
would be completed, along with an equity review session. Schlichting reported the consultant would be
reaching out to two senior complexes, one mobile home community and the Irondale Sustainability Club.

Councilmember Dunsworth questioned if the Council was hoping to learn more or to have more people
involved in the process. She believed it would be helpful for staff to have this information.

Councilmember Abdulle stated he would like to see the City holding one more in person meeting in order to
reach out to new populations in the community.

Councilmember Allen anticipated the average resident would be more interested in how this plan can help
them save money or help the environment. He supported the City holding more meetings along this vein.

Councilmember Axberg agreed this would be of value to the community.

Worksession adjourned at 6:07 pm

Respectfully submitted,

Terri Spangrud
City Clerk
