ProclamationCITY OF NEW BRIGHTON

WHEREAS The City of New Brighton recognizes that Indigenous Peoples have occupied the lands
we now call Minnesota since time immemorial, and the City recognizes the fact that
New Brighton is built upon the ancestral and current homelands of the Wahpekute
and Mdewakanton Dakota people; and
WHEREAS Around 1740, a robust Dakota community called Otonwewakpadan (“Village on a
Stream”) was known to occupy the confluence of Rice Creek and Long Lake, and
arrowheads, which date as early as 5500 BC, and other artifacts have been found on
burial mounds in the area; and
WHEREAS Indigenous Peoples have endured centuries of genocide, forced assimilation,
violence, oppression, and ongoing displacement perpetuated by our state and federal
government; and
WHEREAS The City of New Brighton has a responsibility to oppose the systemic racism towards
Indigenous people in the United States, which exacerbates disproportionate health,
education, and social crises; and
WHEREAS The City of New Brighton is adopting a Land Acknowledgment to highlight the
commitment to raising awareness of persistent consequences of historical legacies;
amplifying the vibrancy of Indigenous people and culture; and respecting the
connection between Indigenous people and the land that the City occupies; and
WHEREAS Recognizing the second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples’ Day is essential
for honoring the history, acknowledging the suffering, and celebrating the
achievements of the Indigenous Peoples.
NOW, THEREFORE I, KARI NIEDFELDT-THOMAS, Mayor of the City of New Brighton, Minnesota do
hereby proclaim October 9, 2023, as
Indigenous Peoples’ Day
in the City of New Brighton.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my
hand and caused the Seal of the City of New Brighton,
Minnesota to be affixed this 26th day of September, 2023.
Kari Niedfeldt-Thomas, MAYOR
