NEW <br /> BRIGHTON <br /> bulidng tomorrow today <br /> ri <br /> Council Worksession <br /> February 13, 2024 <br /> 5:00 pm <br /> Present: Mayor Kari Niedfeldt-Thomas <br /> Councilmember Abdullahi Abdulle <br /> Councilmember Graeme Allen <br /> Councilmember Pam Axberg <br /> Councilmember Emily Dunsworth <br /> Absent: <br /> Staff in Attendance: Devin Massopust, Terri Spangrud (attending remotely) <br /> Guests in Attendance: Asmaa Hamimoune, Karen Collins, Mark Jansen, Sebastian Fallas, Merhawi Yigsaw, <br /> Jon Dummer, Kena Abdissa <br /> Commission Applicant Interviews <br /> Mayor Niedfeldt-Thomas thanked Asmaa Hamimoune for coming in and applying for this position. <br /> Councilmember Axberg asked Ms. Hamimoune to provide the Council with a brief history on how her <br /> personal and professional experiences will help her be an effective commissioner, if appointed. <br /> Ms. Hamimoune stated speech and debate helped her in her communications with people. She explained she <br /> talked a lot about businesses and corporations in debate, which would help her with economics. <br /> Councilmember Abdulle asked what motivated Ms. Hamimoune to serve on a City Commission. <br /> Ms. Hamimoune explained she wanted to be involved in the community and to know more about what was <br /> happening in the City. <br /> Councilmember Dunsworth asked what goals Ms. Hamimoune hopes to accomplish by serving on a <br /> commission. <br /> Ms. Hamimoune indicated she wants to make sure everyone has the same level of playing field, that they could <br /> create their own business. She stated she has her own tutoring business. She indicated this was hard to start, but <br /> she wanted everyone to have the opportunity to start their own business. <br /> Councilmember Allen requested Ms. Hamimoune speak to the City's biggest opportunity and biggest <br /> challenges in New Brighton. <br /> Ms. Hamimoune stated the idea of starting and marketing your own business was hard. She commented in <br /> New Brighton there were a lot ways to do this and opportunities, but the challenge was to start the business and <br />
