Councilmember Dunsworth requested Ms. Hansen speak to the City's biggest opportunity and biggest
challenges in New Brighton.
Ms. Hansen stated one of the biggest opportunities in the community were its people. She believed finding out
what their needs and wants were and being able to help them was a big role of the government. She indicated a
challenge facing New Brighton would be the difference in class and wealth in the community noting this may
divide people and the City should be finding ways to tie people together.
Mayor Niedfeldt-Thomas thanked Ms. Hansen for coming in and applying for this position. She noted City
Clerk Spangrud would be in touch with further information on how the Council was moving forward. She
explained the next person to be interviewed was Sophie Jung.
Councilmember Axberg asked Ms. Jung to provide the Council with a brief history on how her personal and
professional experiences will help her be an effective commissioner, if appointed.
Ms. Jung stated at her school she has served on the student council and the Asian student union. She believed
those clubs helped her learn to voice her opinion. She noted she also has a part time job teaching Tae Kwon Do
which was fun and enjoyable.
Councilmember Allen asked what motivated Ms. Jung to serve on a City Commission.
Ms. Jung explained through student council she learned about the opportunity and she thought this would be
interesting. She hoped to grow as a person through this opportunity.
Councilmember Abdulle asked what are some specific goals Ms. Jung hopes to accomplish by serving on a
commission.
Ms. Jung commented she hoped to make mental health resources more available. She stated at her school there
was a school therapist, but she doesn't know if she was available. She wants to make this a known resource for
all, especially those struggling with mental health.
Councilmember Dunsworth requested Ms. Jung speak to the City's biggest opportunity and biggest challenges
in New Brighton.
Ms. Jung stated she understood there were deans at the school and a therapist, but there was only so much time
in the day for these individuals to see students. She explained she would like to see stress levels reduced and
wanted to encourage people to reach out for help.
Mayor Niedfeldt-Thomas thanked Ms. Jung for coming in and applying for this position. She noted City Clerk
Spangrud would be in touch with further information on how the Council was moving forward.
The Council then shifted their discussion the Commission appointments.
Mayor Niedfeldt-Thomas commented on the Public Safety Commission appointments noting there were two
returning commissioners, one student and one open seat but only two adult and one student applicants. She
suggested some of the other applicants could be asked to reconsider. Massopust noted Tom Harkins and
Roberto Valdizan would be re-appointed to this commission. The Council supported this recommendation.
