I

I

I

Council Meeting Minutes
February 11, 1997

Page 4

State of the City Address. continued

Goal #1: Assuring clean, well-kept physical surroundings
1. We completed park improvements at Innsbruck, Silver Oaks, Hansen and at the
Eagles Nest.
2. We planted more than 200 new trees, as it is important to maintain a vibrant and
healthy urban landscape.
3. The City played a key facilitation role in the remodeling of the Polynesian
Village complex, a pioneering action implementing our Quality Housing
program.
4. We substantially completed four major street improvement projects, including
Silver Lake Road and the Old Downtown area.

Goal #2: Fostering safe, cohesive neighborhoods
1. We added space for Seniors, initiated congregate dining and expanded teen
programming at the Family Service Center.
2. We added computers to five squad cars and expanded our Police staff, approving
the addition of a sworn officer. In 1997, we will be expanding the commitment
to community safety by adding another sworn officer, a crime prevention
specialist and a new Community Service Officer.
3. We started our first major Crime Free Multi-Housing project at Polynesian
Village, reflecting our extension of our Neighborhood Crimewatch program into
our apartment neighborhoods.
4. We were recognized for our SO+ Neighborhood Night Out parties, #16 in the
nation for our population category, again, reflecting commitment of our friends
and neighbors to prevent crime and protect ourselves.

Goal #3: Being leaders in developing a vital and compatible business community
I. We established a joint powers organization with our neighboring cities to
coordinate land use, redevelopment and transportation investment planning.
2. We saw major new construction in Brighton Corporate Park and Lakeview
Business Campus.
3. We began a major updating of our plans for redeveloping the Old Highway
Eight corridor.

As a side note, suggestions have been made that we should consider renaming the
several streets that we call Old Highway Eight. Part of the corridor follows Eighth
Avenue. Part of it follows Fifth Avenue. Part of it is something else. Perhaps we can
help our mail delivery and our business marketing by calling it New Brighton
Boulevard. We welcome your thoughts on this change.

All of the noted improvements and the many we did not mention reflect the energy and
commitment of our Council, our City staff led by Matt Fulton with assistance by Barb
Jeanetta, the many Civic organizations that continue their fine work, and, the countless
volunteers in our churches, our Scout troops, our schools, our Crime Watch groups, our
park and rec. programs, our advisory commissions and others that make our community
a place that we call our hometown. Thanks to all of you for your contribution to New
Brighton.

State of the City
Address
