Of the six alternatives
researched, two allow for the City to refine its current program and
purchase of a smart reading device. The device allows for a decrease in
read time, eliminates data entry and added customer convenience. It is
expected that read cards would be eliminated by 1994,

Engineering Intern Brian Olson said the City has installed 2,600 new
remotes in residences which represents about 50% of the total accounts,

Presently, a meter reader reads the meter and the Utility Clerk enters the
data into a computer, With recent technology, there is an opportunity to
decrease the cost of meter reading, add convenience and increase
accuracy, Technology ranges from an automated system, such as an
inbound telephone system, to a "dumb" handheld gun, such as the City is
proposing. This system is considered "dumb" because it only reads the
meter and doesn't store the reading.

The group has contacted four vendors: Schlumberger, Sensus, Badger, and
Iris.

The inbound telephone system means that the call is being generated by
the customer's residence to the billing computer in City Hall. This system
offers the ability to receive readings directly from the customer without the
use of a meter reader. However, this technology is very expensive.

Consent Aaenda

Tank Removal at
City Garage
Report 92-238
Resolution 92-117

Backhoe-Loader
Report 92-239

Final Payment
Project 91-8
Report 92-240

Proposed Rezoning
Report 92-240A

Council Business

Water Meter
Remotes
Report 92-241
Resolution 92-118
