-I

1

I

Council Meeting Minutes
January 28, 1992

Page 4

Soecial Order of Business. continued

Consumer confidence is shaken. Taxpayer patience is worn out, I hope.
Perhaps this is the year that rhetoric will be replaced by debate on issues
so that we can rebuild confidence in government. Perhaps this year's
campaign will be based on qualifications and not quirks of the candidates.
Let's hope sol

As we begin our new year in New Brighton, I would like to thank the
residents of our great City for their support and vote of confidence in the
November election. I consider my reelection as a personal challenge to
continue our past efforts to provide quality services at an affordable cost
to taxpayers. I thank those friends and neighbors who also renewed their
commitment to New Brighton through their financial and personal support
during the campaign.

I congratulate Steve Larson and Arly Gunderman, also, for their successful
reelection efforts. I look forward to another term with their support, their
ideas, their friendship, their constructive criticism, and their commitment
to New Brighton. I am also looking forward to continued teamwork with
Dana and Roger. Together, we will meet the challenges in 1992 and
1993.

Some have suggested that our Council is somewhat unique in that we
don't engage in partisan, self serving posturing like some councils. I'm
not sure that we're all that unique. However. I do know that the five of
us are dedicated to listening, to learning and to leading our City in a
collaborative way. We each have our unique backgrounds and
experiences. I believe it is our blend of perspectives that enables us to
find solutions to perplexing issues that divide others. And, we are
supported by a staff of dedicated professionals that I am proud to serve as
well. We will need our combined wisdom and strength, even more in
1992. I encourage each and every citizen to join us by offering time,
questions and ideas. Your commitment need not be only to the City itself.
Your active participation in your churches, your schools, your civic groups,
your neighborhood watch groups or in election committees this fall will
help us make New Brighton a safer, more enjoyable place to live. Let
1992 be the year we open our hearts and our minds as we join forces in
making our City the best we can hope to achieve. Thank you.

Consent Agenda

Rebelein requested VI.3, Appointment of City Attorney, be moved to the
Council Business Agenda.

Motion by Larson, seconded by Williams, to APPROVE THE CONSENT
AGENDA ITEMS AS FOLLOWS:

1.
