~

Council Consideration
Sign Permit
March 25, 1975

Request: Council authorization of sign permit for one ground sign

Applicant: Wyman Nelson Enterprises

Location: 696 County Road D

Size of Siqn: 12' x 10' = 120 sq. ft.

Discussion:

The proposed sign would be located generally near the northeast
corner of New Highway 8 and County Road D. It would be the only
ground sign and there would be no signs on the building.

Under Section l4-040(b) of the present ordinance. the
property could have 5 square feet of signing for each lineal
foot of frontage. This permits a total of 1600 square feet of
signing. The present ordinance also places a 35' height limit
and a 40' setback requirement on the sign.

The proposed ordinance regulates the height and area of the
sign based on the type of abutting road. In this case, the sign
is located near the intersection of a freeway ana a non-freeway
road. The ~rdinance contains no guidance as to which set of
standards to apply. The applicant also has not indicated which
way the sign will face.

If the freeway standards, 170 square feet and 35 foot height,
are applied, the sign would conform. If the non-freeway standards,
64 square feet and 20 foot height, are applied, then the sign
will exceed the area requirements and could exceed the height
requirement. Their plans show three possible heights. Any
motion to approve a sign permit should specify the height
permitted.

The proposed ordinance would allow a 13 1/3' setback, however,
the proposed ordinance requires 40'. Two sign locations are
shown on the plan, one with a 40' setback and the other with
approximately a 20' setback. A motion to grant the permit should
also specify the sign location.
