This evolu-
tion has allowed sun tolerant species to grow
and provide shade for the later developing more
sun-intolerant species. The hardwood understory
includes dogwood, viburnums and a variety of
forbs.

Wildlife - The proposed development involves a
limited variety of wildlife habitat types which
are variations of lowland vegetation and water's
edge associations. These associations provide very
good cover for migratory waterfowl and a limited
amount of nesting area for such species, especial-
ly mallard~, teal and pheasants.

I
II

Casual observations over a period of several months
indicate the marshes to support a number of mallards
(at least during fall migration) as well as muskrat.
Other investigators .( (1) Derrickson and (2) DNR)
have indicated sightings or signs of a number of

I

I

111-15

'I
J
