".

~

~

~

Public Hearing
SP-67
Feb. 10, 1976.'
8:50 PM

Request: SP-67, special use permit to allow radio tower in
excess of district height limitations

~pplicant: city of New Brighton

Location: New Brighton Maintenance Building, 700 5th St. NW

Discussion:

As a result of approval of an LEAA grant for Ramsey County
Communities, New Brighton will be changing its radio systems
to provide for multi-banned radios which will allow greater
flexibility in the police communications. Part of this conversion
will involve changing the location of the city radio tower which
is presently on top of the unused water tower next to the Fire
Station on 5th Avenue NW. The new tower is proposed to be
erecteo on the west sioe of the City Maintenance Building
immediately adjacent to the building near the visitor's parking
area. This location is shown on the attached map. The tower
will be a self-supporting structure free of guide wires and will
be 60 feet in height. It will then be topped by the 20 foot
radio antenna. It's general appearance is shown on the attached
drawing. For comparison purposes, we would note that the highest
point of the Maintenance Building wall is approximately 20
feet high so that the total tower and antenna combination will
be approximately 4 times the height of the Maintenance Building.

Location of the tower at the Maintenance Building site is
related to the use of the Maintenance Building as the City's
Civil Defense Disaster Center. It should also be noted that
moving of the radio antenna will allow us to remove the unused
water tower. This in turn will allow for possible expansion of
the Fire Station or possible site changes to improve visibility
for trucks leaving the Station.

The tower's location on the Maintenance Building site
is a result of a need to put it as close to the building as
possible and to the equipment inside the building. The particular
location along the building wall was chosen because of the presence
of electrical outlets which can be used as the power source for
the radio equipment.
