.

BOGER JOHNSON. JAMES FOBBEBG ASSOCIATES I ABCHITEcr8

1409 WILLOW STREET I MINNEAPOLIS I MINNESOTA 55403 I 612-871-7741
ROGER T. JOHNSON. MEMBER A.I..A. I JAMES H. FORBERG I RICHARD H. SMITH I ROY A. SATHER

MEMORANDUM - INTER OFFICE

DATE:

July 7, 1977

Subject:

JUO New Brighton

The following meetings, telephone conversations and site observations were
made on July 6 and 7, 1977.

Telecon with Mr. Wilderness, District 5 Office, Minnesota Highway Department.

-
The Highway Department uses Class 5 seed with a straw mulch to seed roadsides.
This is a standard seed mixture which is specified. Seeding is done on top-
soils available in the area. He commended we call John Henslin (296-3766),
State Department of Agriculture who makes recommendations on seed mixtures
for the soi 1 condi ti ons for them.

The highway department uses calcium chloride solutions on nearly all
construction projects and feels that it is the only practical solution. It
works very well when humidity is high as it draws moisture from the air.
In dry conditions it may require sprinkling to get enough moisture to work.
It is better than sprinkli~ roads as you eliminate tracking on to roadways.

Site Visit - July 7, 1977

p, visit was made to the site to see if recent rains had caused any erosion on
the west slope. No erosion was observed and ground cover was observed to be
good to excellent. Large numbers of Cottonwood trees have grown back on the
west slope. Some are 25 to 30 feet tall. A very large number of smaller
trees and shrubs are growing on the slope just east of the south property
line of the Minneapolis Water Department property. The entire slope is
covered with a mixture of various weeds, sweet clover and smaller amounts
of rye and crested wheat grass. It would appear that further measures to
stab~lize the slope would be unnecessary.

cc: ,JUG
