REPORT OF CHEMICAL TESTING ON FOUNDRY SAND
PURCHASE ORDER N0. 1070
~i21961
INTRODUCTION
This report presents our findings regarding the laboratory chemical
tests we have performed on samples of foundry sand furnished to us
by you. Four bag samples were delivered to our laboratory on September
5, 1975.
LABORATORY TEST PROCEDURES
The laboratory tests were performed. to determiTe the amount of water
leachable phenol, cyanide, total nitrogen (as NH3) and formaldehyde from
each sample. Also, loss-on-ignition tests were performed.
Leach Water Preparation
Generally 100 ml of water was added to SO g of sand. After mixing well
with a glass rod the sand was allowed to settle and the water to
remain in contact with the sand overnight. Then the water was filtered `-
array from the sand, and an additional 100 ml of water was filtered
through the sand. Except for the formaldehyde analysis the entire
sample was used in the subsequent analysis.
Phenol Analysis
In general the method of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for
phenolics was followed (Methods for Chemical Analysis of Water and
SOEL G-'~CE~L06~c~iCtC~C7
