~,.. <br />' December 14, 1983 <br />KOREAN UNITED METHODIST CHURCH <br />UN-228 <br />PURPOSE <br />To consider a request for a variance to put up a cross which will extend. <br />above the roof line of an existing building and which also constitutes <br />a second sign. <br />BACKGROUND <br />~PDI rrANT• <br />LOCATION: <br />ZONING: <br />pR~vrniic rniiNrri ar.TTnN~ <br />CURRENT SIGNING: <br />PROPOSED SIGNING <br />VARIANCE REQUIRE: <br />STANDARDS FOR A VARIANCE: <br />Korean United Methodist Church <br />701 8th Avenue NW <br />R-1, Single Family Residential <br />On May 24, 1983 the Council approved <br />a special use permit (SP-111) to <br />allow for the former Community Resource <br />Center to be used as a church. <br />A sign permit has been approved to put <br />up a sign with the name of the church <br />in English and Korean letters. The <br />sign will be located directly adjacent <br />to the front door. Iron letters will be <br />used and attached directly to the <br />building. <br />The applicant is proposing to attach a <br />15 foot iron cross to the building <br />(see attached diagram). The cross will <br />extend 9 feet above the roof line. <br />The cross is considered a sign and not <br />part of the building structure. Section <br />9-130(1) of the zoning code states that <br />"no wall sign shall have any part thereof <br />extend above or beyond the peak of the <br />roof or beyond the outline of the <br />building or roof as viewed from the front <br />of the sign". <br />Section 9-040 of the zoning code states <br />that either one ground sign or one wall <br />sign is permitted for institutions in <br />R-l residential zoning districts. <br />Section 8-230 of the zoning code states <br />that variances may be granted where the <br />applicant is able to prove that the <br />following conditions exist: <br />1. Undue Hardship <br />2. Unique Circumstances <br />3. No detriment to adjacent property <br />or the public as a whole. <br />
