July 10, 1980
NEW BRIGHTON DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS
The population of New Brighton is estimated at 23,620 (April '79)
as compared to 19,507 (April '70). The current population totals
should remain nearly stable. Both the number of people under 17
years of age (based on school district data) and family size decreased
in the last 10 years. However, there was an increase in the number
of people 60 years or older. In 1979, household size was estimated
at 3.115 persons compared. to 3.508 in 1970. This is a decrease of
11$ in household size.
Household size has declined on both the national and local
levels due to several factors. Among these are the decrease in the
birthrate, increase in divorces, postponement of both marriage and
childbearing, the increase in females employed outside the home, the
increase in people living alone, or the number of unrelated individ-
uals living together.
The school district has shown a 0-lOg decrease in K-6 over the
last 5 years and project greater than a 20$ decrease over the next
5 years. Likewise 7-12 has shown a 0-10~ increase and is projected
for a 11-20~ decrease.
Most of the current data collected was based on estimates of the
Metropolitan Council. More accurate and detailed data should be avail-
able in the near future from the 1980 census.
Ken Johnson
Mike Grimshaw
George Carlson
