4/9/81
Long Lake Discussion Points
Unci i-i va
Ramsey County is unwilling or unable to allow de-
velopment and subsequent maintenance and operation
expenses.
City has made $650,000 commitment-with 197.0 dollars.
Residents deserve opportunity to use the park soon.
City understands and is willing to accept responsibility
for operation and maintenance of the park.
As regional parks go, Long Lake is small (200 acres) and
can be operated by a City of New. Brighton size.
The park has excellent access off two major freeways and
"close in" to large population centers.
Development of the park will provide opportunities for
additional water based activities in. the Twin Cities
metro area - high. priority with with DNR and Metro
Council.
The Minnesota legislature is unlikely to provide operating
and maintenance monies as requested by the counties.
Development money is currently available (:$600,,000) and
cannot be spent on this park under present conditions.
In its present state the park is being extensively abused
and vandalized.
Negative
Opposed to Metro policy.
May reduce consistency of maintenance and operating standards
among implementing agencies.
Small governmental.-units may not have resources to maintain
regional parks (less true today than previously).
