July 1, 1981 Park Board Minutes Page 5
• Gunderman opened up discussion to the residents.
Ron DuFrane, 1728 14th N.W., said he heard in earlier discussion
that Ramsey County had similar responsibilities to Long Lake Park
as they would Lake Johanna and Josephine.
Anderson said he could not compare the two. New Brighton would
operate the Long Lake beach-and the County the rest.
DuFrane asked what the hours of operation would be and who would
supervise.
Anderson said that would be spelled out in the master plan.
DuFrane asked for an example.
Anderson said the Park Board, City Council, Ramsey County Staff
and Met Council all have to agree on the content of the master
plan. As we work through the process it is decided but can't
predict now what will be decided. The City does have veto power.
Pat Cobb, 1700 19A St. Nt^l~asked who will benefit to the regional
park. Why are we going to a regional/county park?
Gunderman said the County purchased park land next to ours and
• it was brought up that if the two could be combined we would have a
better park.
Anderson said that in 1974 the site was approved for a regional
park. It was a City .Council decision.
Cobb again asked why have a regional park.
Van Hatten stated to keep operation and maintenance costs .down.
We all have the opportunity to have something very nice. There
are more needs in the County and the State that we can share.
We want participation to finance the facility.
Cobb stated he feels differently.
Gunderman commented that Met Council funds this. It has to go
through the County to get the money.
Cobb said Ramsey County bought Rush Lake to get in Long Lake be-
cause Rush Lake is nothing without Long Lake. We have to have
control. We don't have say as to what will happen.
Marv Cook, 2194 Lakebrook Drive, asked what point in time would
the master plan be available to look at.
Anderson said about two months from the time the joint powers agree-
. ment is ratified.
Cook said there appears to be lots of blacktop planned. We like
to look at trees. We want to keep the trees.
