May 6, 1981 Park Board Minutes
Page 6
Grimshaw said he heard Van Hatten say that in the future the
park would be expanded.
Van Hatten said there are a number of phases. The first phase
will not include the park. The second phase or third will move
the development down here and this area will be included in the
district. It would probably not happen for 2-3 years. The
park would be 2 blocks long.
C. Donation Use (Basic Industries & Micom) Space.r~et
l~nderson sa~,d the puppet wagon was talked about at length at the
April 14th Council meeting. The Council decided to send---the issue
back to staff and Park Board for further review. The Council asked
for details on puppet wagons such as use figures, pictures, .material
costs.
Anderson said the Council has asked for a list of items on how the
donation money could best be utilized. It is his understanding that
the list is to be prioritized. The Council would then choose from
the prioritized list. Anderson said some of the Council members
feel that the money should be used to purchase-CIP items we have
already identified, and others feel the money should be used to
purchase something unique; something we would not normally purchase.
Johnson said he favors having a list of priorities developed yearly
at the same time as the 5 year CIP budget plan.
Kelly Schultz was present to explain to the Park Board the resea~
she had done during the past months.. She stated Maplewood, Moun~
View and Woodbury were a few cities which had puppet wagons whit
were all well received. .Maplewood has a very good program that
runs 6 hours a day at 20 minutes per stop. It operates every day
(5 days per week) for 12 weeks. They also rent it out occasionally
on weekends. Woodbury's puppet program is relatively new but they
feel it has been well received. In pricing material costs it comes
to approximately $493. A trailer is about $1,000. Most puppet
wagons have a theme. Stillwater had there wagon in the shape of
a boat. Schultz was thinking New Brighton's theme could be a
caboose or train.. The sound system would be a very important part
of the puppet wagon. We could use the sound system in other programs
as well, such as gymnastics, aerobics and seniors. The system that
was looked into was a Pioneer SK31. Speakers, microphones and
adaptor for car battery would also be needed. The total, including
two car batteries is approximately $536. A similar system has been
purchased for another community puppet wagon.
Gunderman suggested checking into how many watts the unit was. It
may not produce the quality sound needed.
Olson asked what kind of response the other communities were getting
on their puppet wagon.
Schultz stated that Woodbury who is just getting started had 30
kids per stop. Maplewood has 12 stops a day and averages 25 kid •
They contact the concentrated areas.
