NEW BRIGHTON PARK BOARD MINUTES
MARCH 3~ 19.81
I. The meeting was called to order at 7:.30 p,m. by Chairperson Gunderman.
II. All members were present
III. Minutes of the February 3, 1981 meeting were approved as submitted.
IV. Correspondence
A. Council Report
Council Representative Schmidt summarized what had happened at the
Council meeting. Of main concern to the Park Board was the testing
that was going on at the Long Lake site by the PCA. Schmidt commented
that the-City is trying to get cost figures on the clean-up of the
oil on the site.
Anderson said the City is applying for a permit for clean up but
feels the PCA may still require more tests of the area to determine
what method of clean up may be used. It is possible that the waste
may be incorporated into asphalt niix. This will not be free but it
will be cheaper than if it has to be hauled out of .State.
Solberg asked if there is hazardous waste involved.
Anderson said yes. He feels PCA will require extra testing because
they cannot tell us how to dispose of it unless they know what is
in it.
Carlson asked how large an area was affected.
Anderson said about. 100 feet by 200 feet on our side. On the rail
road portion it is less concentrated but a larger area.. Ours.`s
2-3 feet of sludge. Our portion is ..,more of a problem. Time has
solved much of the railroad's problems. They will have to plug up
a well which will be costly.
Schmidt recalled it was something like 2,000 feet of sludge we
needed to dispose of.
Solberg was worried that this disposal process may take a very..
long time.
Anderson said he hoped it would be done this year. He feels we
should spend the money for the clean up.
Van Hatten asked what kind of soil was in that area.
Anderson said sand. He added that there is a heavy clay area be-
neath and as far as we can tell, the waste has not penetrated the
clay..
