STATE OF
LI V LI V ~ ~ ~ ~Q
DEPARTMENT
September 19, 1977
Ntr. Maurie Anderson
City of New Brighton
803 5th Avenue Northwest
New Brighton, Minnesota 55112
Dear Mr. Anderson:
4600
OF NATURAL RESOURCES
Region VI Fisheries
1200 Warner Road
St. Paul, Minnesota 5510b
296-2959
Enclosed is a draft report of a census we conducted on eighteen Minneapolis-
St. Paul area lakes during the sum~Ler of 1974.
You will notice that there are various categories of water surface users.
Estimates on use (pressure) is given in sailboat hours, canoe hours, runabout
hours, waterskiing hours and fishing or angler hours. Sailboat, canoe, and
runabout hours are craft hours but waterskiing and fishingG~articipant hours.
In 1975 we conducted a similar survey on Lake Minnetonka and obtained in-
formation on the average number of people for various types of watercraft.
Although not exactly correct, this information could be used to give a better
estimate on the participant hours. On Minnetonka, we found 3.12 people per
runabout, 2.46 people per sailboat, and 2.13 people per canoe. If you want
to convert boat angler-hours to fishing boat hours, the Minnetonka data
indicated 2.30 people per fishing boat.
Information on other Ramsey County area Lakes may give you an indication of
what could be expected on Long Lake if an access was available in June,
July and August. I think it is obvious that no access during that period
is depressing boating now, but unrestricted use would probably result in
a lot of high speed use which may not be the same as maximum safe recreation-
al use.
In our 1975 census of Lake Minnetonka we separated weekend from weekday use
and found that boating pressure on a weekend day was two and one-half times
greater than a week day. I believe this would hold true for this 1974
survey also.
If you have any questions, please call me at 296-2959.
Yours truly,
Duane M. Shodeen
Regional Fisheries Supervisor
elb
ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES • WATERS, SOILS, AND MINERALS • LANDS AND FORESTRY
GAME AND FISH + PARKS AND RECREATION • ENFORCEMENT AND FIELD SERVICE
55
