POLICY FOR NAMING PARKS
The naming of a park is a matter that must be seriously deliberated
and not left to chance or whim. It is the responsibility of those
selecting the name to be aware of the effects and permanency of their
decision.
Timir~g,is very important in naming parks, often a name used on a
,\
temporary basis during construction or planning phases will "stick" and
by default becomes permanent. It is, therefore, desirable to select a
name as early as possible, preferably while the park is still in the
planning stages.
Considerations:
1. Should parks be named for persons, living or dead and under
what circumstances.
2. Should donations of land, money or structures justify naming
for the donor. If so, under .what condition.
LI-. Should civic organization names be used and if so, under what
conditions.
5. Should park names ever be changed, if so, how justified and
accomplished.
General Classification of Names:
Persons' Names:
Small Donors State Official
Large Donors Local Official
Historic Group Civilian National Heroes
Local War Heroes National Official
Board/Commission Member Others
Combination Hero-Historic
Person
Park and Recreation Director
__
''
