• •
(2)
Status of Community School Program
The staff is working with the Community Education Coordinator to further
develop the transfer of recreation responsibility from the school distric
to the municipalities. One critical concern is the possibility that
school pools will be retained by the school district for programming.
It is the staff's position that pools can generate revenues over and
above program costs and that these excess revenues can be used to
support less-affluent activities. It appears that the school is trying
to relieve themselves of the less-affluent activities while keeping
those that generate excess revenues.
In response to Gunderman's query regarding the Highview skating rinks,
it was reported that the system is working smoothly due in large part to
the cooperation of the part of the principal and head custodian. One
concern is on the lack of use of the free-skating facility. The De-
partment received considerable neighborhood pressue to develop such a
facility, yet it does not receive even minimal use. The agreement has
one more year to run and we will continue to operate both the hockey
and free-skating rink and will also attempt to increase attendance on
both.
Department Report
1. Dahl asked if the tennis courts at Hansen Park would be repaired
for summer use. It was reported that money had been budgeted to
temporary repair the courts, however, that budget figure was
arrived at in July X973 and asphalt costs have increased tremendously,
It is hoped that monies appropriated will be sufficient. The suit
against the park planner for permanent relief of the tennis court
problem has been delayed due to the City Attorney's involvement
in the sewer interceptor case with the Metro Board.
2. The Public Hearing on the proposed Capital Improvements Program
will be held on March 6th at Irondale High School at 7:30 p.m.
THE MARCH PARK BOARD NIEETTNG Tr?ILL BE HELD ON WEDNESDAY, MARCH 1.3TH
AT 8:00 P.M. SO THAT BOARD MEMBERS STILL ATTEND THE PUBLIC HEARING,
Meeting was adjourned at 9:..15 p,m.
Respectfully submitted,
Robert M. Wicklund
Director of Parks and Recreation
RMW:dk
