.Park Board
January 6, ~1
2
The Board then discussed the various alternatives. The factors brought
up included efficient use of space, the most economical structure, the
aesthetic merits of each type and the flexibility available in the
future.
Sherlock moved that the Park Board direct Mr. Dickey to continue with
the concept of the circular-shaped building and to design a warming
shelter as a wedge section of that circle. Dahl seconded the motion.
A discussion of the motion followed. It was brought out that adopting
this type of structure committed the future expansion of the building
to a specific size, shape and location. A free-standing shelter would
not commit future expansion in any way. Proponents of the wedge shape
stated that it could stand alone as easily as the other and they
favored the over-all circular concept.
Roll Call Dahl., Hagemeyer, Sherlock, Weissman - aye
Barnhill, Smith - Hoye
Gunderman -abstained
Gunderman requested Hagemeyer to assume the chair.
Gunderman stated he was opposed to the action and asked the Board to
consider delaying carrying out of the action until more information
was available. He expressed concern over the appearance to the
general public that the Board was committing itself to the future size,
type, and location of a community center before the requisite facts
were available. The wedge-shape would appear like .part of a future
community center whereas the free-standing shelter would not give
such an appearance. Dahl expressed disagreement stating the two did
not differ in that respect.
Gunderman moved to delay carrying out the previous motion until
additional soil borings could be obtained. Motion defeated for lack
of a second. Gunderman stated the Board should not proceed with the
wedge design until it was known that the soil around the wedge would
support the future sections of the circular community center. Dickey
explained that it would be possible for him to create a design
incorporating the best aspects of both alternatives.
Sherlock moved to order the architect to defer proceeding with a wedge
shape building until additional information including more soil borings
and modification of the proposed designs was presented.
Dahl seconded the motion. Motion passed
This information is to be presented at the February 3, meeting.
