LONG LAKE PARK UPDATE
A master plan for development of Long Lake Park as a
regional park jointly operated by the city and Ramsey
.County has been approved by both units of government.
The plan includes a day camp area, expanded and relocated
swimming beach, picnic areas for small and large groups,.
boat. launch, trail.. facilities and a nature study area.
The plan must be approved by the Metropolitan Council
and is currently in its review process.
Construction was to begin in late 1982 or early 1983,.
however, the Long Lake Improvement Association-has
petitioned the Environmental Quality Board requesting that
an Environmental Impact Statement be prepared on the pro-
posed development. Expressed concerns of the Association
are potential overcrowding of the lake, additional storm
water run-off into the lake and concerns over noise levels
from park users. The request for an EIS is currently under
review by the Environmental Quality Board. A decision
should be reached by September or October of 1982. If an
EIS is not required, construction will begin in early 1983;
if an ETS is required construction will likely begin in 1984.
The city and county are contesting the request for an ETS
contending that environmental concerns have been adequately
addressed and that further delays are unnecessary.
5/28/82
