January 6, ~ 1982 • Park Board Minutes Page 2 Jerry Bensing stated he wanted the record to show that he will have $70 given to Sue Louma if needed for the Long Lake clean up. Grimshaw suggested the flyer and story be sent to the New Brighton Bulletin to get publicity. Johnson commented it was a nice gesture on Bensing's part. B. Gayle Bromander - Railroad Museum, Long Lake Park Gayle Bromander discussed three items with the Park Board 1. The New Brighton Historical Society, at the City Council's November meeting, asked the Council for a moratorium on development of specific areas in New Brighton's portion of Long Lake Park so that they have time to determine if there is any historical significance. The society is asking for one year. They are asking that part of the rhubarb patch. by Joe Hipp's be salvaged. Bromander stated he will be writing a letter to the Council regarding the above. 2. Stockyard days - would like to do it again and keep it as • an annual event.- He thinks he can get Dick Bury's approval for use of property. Would like. to request that in the park planning, the stockyard days be considered for parking, etc. 3. Minnesota Transportation Museum - It is now professionally organized. Its purpose is to restore old trains, equipment, etc. They have a building at Burlington Northern Railroad yards at Como. The entire area will be purchased for an energy park. The buildings will be torn down. There is a possibility of them coming to New Brighton. We would need about 4 acres. Want to be able to run excursion trips. Trackage for the museum is available in Netir Brighton and St. Paul. Members are leaning toward New Brighton because it will be longer and more scenic and easy to get their equipment in and out. It will be beneficial to New Brighton. It will have impact on park usage. Dick Bury has set aside about 4 acres. Would like ~ to 1 acre on the other side of tracks. Twin Cities Model Railroad Club is interested in having part for their display. Would like 4 acres by Texgas. Building would be 200,000 square feet constructed of metal. Johnson said it sounds like a good idea. Wondered if the Long Lake residents are aware of this. ~. • Bromander said it has been mentioned but he has not heard any ' opposition. The Park Board members generally agreed this was a good idea, however the concern was that it is late in the park planning stage and they would not want to make any major changes in the plan because of this. Also the concern was the reaction and feelings of the Long Lake residents in regard to this.
