December 1, 1982 Park Board Minutes
Page 4
Consideration at this point is for New Brighton Parks and Rec.
to offer two hours of recreation classes at Highview Middle
School. in conjuntion with the district's academic summer
school classes at Highview. Because the recreation program
and summer school would be at the. same location, bins trans-
portation would be available both to and from the school. The
School District is in favor of this joint programming be-cause
Parks and Recreation can offer the programs at a lesser fee
because they do not have to pay teacher salaries for instructors.
This joint programming would also. take place between the School
District and other Parks and Recreation Departments within the
School District boundaries. They are: Mounds View, Arden Hills,
and Shoreview. Each would have a different site to offer their
programs.
It was commented by-staff and Park Board that it would relieve
duplication of .programs between the School District and Parks
and Recreation Departments.
It was noted that there would be no additional cost to the
Parks and Recreation Department.
The .Park Board agreed that this kind of programming is needed
in the community.
It was pointed out that it is important that you support the
need. Piggy back wherever you can. Validate why it is important
and get jointly involved and keep it going.
Both the School District and the Parks-and Recreation Department
are .making the best use of their resources.-
A concern was brought up that it could be dangerous if the
summer school funds fell. through.
A reply comment was that the money for summer school has already
been allocated.
It was noted that teachers may think the Parks~.arid Recreation
Departments are trying to take over summer .school, but it was
understood that Parks and Recreation would only be programming
activities that were known to the School District as "enrichment"
classes. Parks and Recreation will not be programming any
academic. classes.
The Park Board's general feelings were that this is a good
opportunity and savings for the residents.
The Park Board felt that it may be worth abandoning some current
programs with low participation if staff time becomes a problem.
Motion by Van Hatten, seconded by Johnson, to support the
program. Motion carried.
