November 2, 1983 Park Board Minutes Page 3
B. Wellness Program
Anderson commented that he keeps hearing about the wellness
concept and although the. department provides many of the
wellness-type activities, the effort is uncoordinated. We
have hired a part-time consultant jointly with Mounds View.
We are trying to find a way to have a community based wellness
program for the whole family. We are not aware of any program
like this in Minnesota. LeAnn Linder, our consultant, has
extensive experience in wellness programming and has taught
at St. Olaf. We are. expecting programs to start in December
and January and they-will be self supporting.
Van Hatten suggested contacting Control Data or other organizations
that are working on this type of program.
Anderson said she has contacted a good deal of them already and
she has contacted many of the local. pastors and city residents
and they are all very excited about the program.
Gunderman said it sounds like an excellent program.
C. Halloween Activity 1984
Anderson said the department wanted to work with three elementary
schools to plan. Halloween activities but got. started too-late.
Would like the Park Board's comments about this idea for next
year.
Olson said some kind of program had been: held at Har Mar, perhaps
they could be contacted for ideas and suggestions.
Van Hatten-said the activities would-have to start very early,
about 5:00 p.m. because as soon as it gets-dark, the kids are
ready to go out, He enjoys having the kids come to the door.
Anderson said this would be an alternative for the parents that
did not want their children to go door to door.
Van Hatten suggested doing it as a fund raiser for Camp Courage
or another charitable institution..
Grimshaw felt there should be something but maybe not at three
schools.
Dahl said she shares Van. Hatten's feelings - the activities at
the school should. include a costume party.
Gunderman asked what age group this would be for.
Anderson said KT6.
Carlson said.'it is difficult to plan-for kids with such an age
span. Maybe have younger age kids at one school and-alder kids
at another..
