September 5,.1984 Park Board l~Zinutes Page 2
V. New Business
A. Long Lake Surface Use Ordinance
The Park and Recreation Department received clot of calls from
residents during the period of time the lake was elosedt There
were clot of different responses. A few people made. the comment-
that only the north basin should be closed because there are
only a few houses at the south end and .their property wasn't
affected by the wakes of boats.
Carlson-arrived:-at this time and Anderson asked_hm what he
thought of the idea of closing only the north basin.
Carlson said .that_is legitimate because the south end doesn't
have much low:. property.
Anderson said that would concentrate use in the south end.
Carlson. said that is not a b--ig problem now, but when the new
launch site is in it will be hard to predict how many people.
that may draw in. Maybe the public launch in the north bay
could be closed.
Anderson said that mey be tough. It could be 1988. or 89 before
the boat launch is done.
Carlson said there .was alot of confusion in regard to the closing
of Long Lake this summer. It appeared that there was a lack of
communication between the Park & Rec. .Dept. and the Police.
Anderson thought that the L.L.i.A. would help spread the
word about the lake closing but apparently no attempt was made.
Gunderman asked what the pleasure of the board is.
Anderson said his question is: in absence of any. formal request,
should there be any changes to the existing surface use ordinance?
Olson did not feel there should be any change without good backup
reasons but she does feel that communication could be better between
the Park and Rec. & Police Dept.
Carlson stated he would encourage installation of two additional
signs when the lake is closed. One on the far north side of the
lake so someone. would not have to drive to the south end of the
lake to look at the sign and then find out it is closed, The
other sign should be placed at the beach area-for the police to
come and check to determine if the lake is open.
Gunderman said the Park.Board's concession appears to be to
improve communication-with the police and residents:,
Carlson requested that the Park & Rec. Dept, communicate information
regarding the lake closing to the Sheriff's Water Patrol, it would
help considerably.
