Thee
summarized results of the survey as shown here indicate a.
strong demand for bicycling, swimming, camping, tennis,
hiking, cross country skiing, fishing, snowmobiling and
ice skating.
Percent of Metro Population Desiring More
Opportunities for Recreational Activities
_Activity
Bicycling
Camping
Tennis
Cross Country Skiing
Fishing
Swimming
Hiking
Snowmobiling
Picnicking
Percent of Population
Re~uestin~Activty
Boating
lee Skating Figure 12 1979
21.9
16.0
14.4
11.9
11:4
i 0.3
8.2
6.3
5.3
5.3
2.8
Of these, swimming, tennis and ice skating are activities
commonly associated with municipal park systems.; New
Brighton meets or exceeds the standards far tennis and ice
skating and with the anticipated development. of Long Lake
Park, residents will soon have adequate swimming, picnic and
trail facilities. The inclusion of trails, picnicking and swim-
ming facilities in Long Lake Park are likely regardless of what
governmental unit develops and operates the park.
In summary, the City's park system, as developed with
projected improvements, is consistent with recommendations
of the 1979 SCORP Plan.
The application of nationally accepted standards. for park
and recreation facilities to New Brighton's open space system
will give a basis for decisions to be rnade regarding future
acquisition and development. It should be noted that these
standards are more guidelines than standards. Changes in
the demographics of a community and socia-economic
changes such as energy shortages and changing patterns
of leisure-tune activities further erode the credibility of
these standards.
