February 1, 19$5
To: New Brighton Park Board
From: Maurice H, Anderson, Director of .Parks and Recreation
Re: February Park Board Agenda Items
Hedlund land purchase
The Council has directed staff and the ?ark Board to
examine the possibility of purchasing tYie westerly
portion of Mr. Hedlund`s property. As can be noted
from the attached, information this can be accomplished
without significant impact on the usability of Mr. Hedlund's
property. There are several different amounts of land that
could be examined, however, the most logical. would be cone
sider purchase of land west of the ditch.
The question the Board should .address is whether this
purchase would significantly benefit the park.
Advantage to Purchase
-Increase park size
-Improve, legitimatize access to xiver
-Future channel improvements might be less
complicated if city and county were "united"
Disadvantages
-Land in question is either steep bank or
under water
-Cost
-Increased liability
Staff does not recommend purchase regardless of the price.
Comp Plan Review
The city will review and revise its Comprehensive .Plan. in
1985,. The park position of that plan must also be revised
and the Park Board should .become involved in that process.
2 am recommending that the Board set a series of neighborhood
mtgs. to review park development and recreation program
development. I further recommend that the Board consider a
sub-committee to work on this project and possibly two or
three sub-committees to conduct the neighborhood meetings.
