Veterans Park Neighborhood Meeting 5/7/86
Pat Nelson, Program Supervisor for the Parks and Recreation Dept.
introduced Bill Midness, Landscape Architect with Damon Farber and
Associates.
Midness explained that the Park Board had seen three different
plans suggested for Veterans Park. Out of those three the Park
Board asked that a combination of things in each plan be put
together. This combination was shown in plan #4. The City
Council had suggested that one of the plans be shown without
the ball field; plan #5.
Plan #1 - Midness explained that the parking and city hall were
the. proposed plans.; not was is currently there. Access from
5th Ave. would be without steps, detention area, bike path/walking
path, gazebo, access by parking lot, tot lot, ball field turned around,
observation area for tot lot all would be included.
Plan #2 -.Has the same elements as #1. Detention area would be water,
bridge, amphi-theatre, shelter in central area, tot lot, ball field
shows 3rd Ave. closed so the ball field is enlarged and a path system.
Plan #3 - This is more formal, has sitting aria with plaza, fountain,
path system, ball field revamped with 3rd Ave. closed, tot lot.
Plan #4 - This is the combination of all three that the Park Board
suggested. Two accesses from 5th Ave., small plaza area for Veterans
memorial perhaps with flags, trail system is more elaborate, pond
with backup, bridge, shelter in center, free skating area, access
from City Hall for employees, tot lot, ball field smaller even though
3rd Ave. is closed because of snow, heavy buffering and plantings...
Plan #5 - Passive scheme - no ball field, no amphi-theatre, pavilion,
concert grove (which is not as formal as amphi-theatre), bike/jogging
path, multi-use tot lot and seniors area, croquet, lawn bowling area,
berming.
Midness opened it up for comments.
Resident - will there be a hockey rink?
No,just free skating
Resident - Four of the plans show the closing of 3rd Ave. There
is a petition to keep it open, what would happen to the plans if
it is open.
Midness - the ball field-would be 250'.
Nelson - 300' is the USSSA required size for men, 250' for women.
Now the field is approx. 260'.
Midness - for safety reasons we did not want the ball field too close
to the street.
