Mattson
Superintendent
Larry E. Holmberg
Supervisor
Planning and Acquisition
Thank you for your letter of January 7, 1986, requesting my reaction to the
New Brighton Park Board propooal regarding the acquisition of a lot and con-
struction of an access to Long Lake Regional Park at the "narrows" of the lake.
I understand that the proposal would benefit a large. area of residents west
of the lake, by providing a shorter, safer pedestrian and bicycle access to
the park.
However, I cannot support or would not recommend approval of this proposal
for the following reasons:
1.) There will be pedestrian and bike access to the park
around both the north and south end of the lake. These
two access points are about 1/2 to 1 mile from the narrows.
The distance to-these .two access points is not great
enough to justify another expensive park access point..
2.) The cost will undoubtedly be very high. Either a
bridge high enough to allow all types of boats to
pass under,. or a tunnel would be very costly. No
Metro funding is presently available, and the earliest
possible date for additional funding, provided it was
approved, would be the FY '90-91 C.T.P.
3.) Police control would become more difficult with another
access point.
4.) Park access points were an important issue in develop-
ment of the master plan. ule feel that the present
development concept in the master plan is well thought
out and has had ample public input..
For these reasons, I would not recommend further consideration of this proposal.
Sincerely,
.._----
~~
A hony J.
