Holmberg Supervisor Planning and Acquisition Thank you for your letter of January 7, 1986, requesting my reaction to the New Brighton Park Board propooal regarding the acquisition of a lot and con- struction of an access to Long Lake Regional Park at the "narrows" of the lake. I understand that the proposal would benefit a large. area of residents west of the lake, by providing a shorter, safer pedestrian and bicycle access to the park. However, I cannot support or would not recommend approval of this proposal for the following reasons: 1.) There will be pedestrian and bike access to the park around both the north and south end of the lake. These two access points are about 1/2 to 1 mile from the narrows. The distance to-these .two access points is not great enough to justify another expensive park access point.. 2.) The cost will undoubtedly be very high. Either a bridge high enough to allow all types of boats to pass under,. or a tunnel would be very costly. No Metro funding is presently available, and the earliest possible date for additional funding, provided it was approved, would be the FY '90-91 C.T.P. 3.) Police control would become more difficult with another access point. 4.) Park access points were an important issue in develop- ment of the master plan. ule feel that the present development concept in the master plan is well thought out and has had ample public input..
