June 21, 1994
Mr. Maurie Anderson
Director, New Brighton Parks and Recreation
1975 Silver Lake Road
New Brighton, MN 55112
Dear Mr. Anderson:
Thank you for taking the time to attend our neighborhood meeting regarding Silver Oak
Park. Your input was both helpful and informative.
As we discussed, our neighborhood is very anxious to improve Silver Oak Park. The
primary areas of concern include:
1. Replacement of current playground equipment with safer, age appropriate (toddler to
pre-teen), and aesthetically pleasing modern equipment.
2. The placement of new tennis courts near Oakwood Drive. We would like to explore
other placement possibilities, i.e. at or near the current sheltered picnic area.
3. Placement of soccer goals on the graded area (currently earmarked for tennis courts)
during summer. This area would be ideal for flooding for ice skating in the winter. The
current area used for ice skating is not very accessible in deep snow and its altitude results
in greater wind chill.
4. Parking during baseball season on Oakwood Drive makes for dangerous conditions
for both drivers and children crossing the street. Limiting parking to a single side of the
street may alleviate this danger.
We feel that the problems and needed improvements at Silver Oak Park are critical.
Therefore, we are requesting that the 1995 budget for improvements to Silver Oak Park,
which was pushed out to 1996, be pulled back to 1995. It is our understanding that we
will need $30,000 (thirty thousand dollars) to replace the playground structure and
surrounding area with equipment similar to Driftwood and Vermont Parks.
It is our intention to look into raising additional funds for improvements to Silver Oak
Park. It is our understanding that the City of New Brighton will provide matching funds.
We will inform you of our intended fund raising goal by early fall.
Thank you in advance for your consideration of our requests. We look forward to hearing
from you soon. We are anxious to have a neighborhood park that is safe and fun for our
families.
Sincerely,
The Silver Oak Park Neighbors
