On a related matter, one point of major contention has pertained to the east-west trail extending from Bent Tree Hills Drive to the pond area. Since the Pazk Boazd's meeting, I have had an opportunity to consider this trail development further. There is no question that pazk users need to be provided with the ability and legal right to move within the pazk in an east-west manner. The proposed trail on the park master plan clearly provides this ability. However, given the developing nature of the subdivision area, pedestrian movement patterns have not been established and will not be fully known for a couple more years. The residents in the immediate area have expressed a concern over the construction of an asphalt trail. While I believe it will ultimately be in the municipality's best interest to develop the asphalt trail, I do not believe there is a great urgency to see it constructed until such time as the neighborhood is further along in its development and the demand for the asphalt trail is greater. I believe that by forestating the area, a corridor can be created to be used by the public, but that ultimately an asphalt trail will be deemed necessary to help define the public walkway area. However, in view of the residents concerns, it might be appropriate for the council to consider leaving the east-west trail identified on the park master plan and indicating its intent to defer the actual construction of the trail until a later time (most likely in the third year of the planned pazk development). If the council chooses this option, it is important that everybody understand that this issue, and those critical of an asphalt installation, will reappear at that time.
